Energy Technology Systems Integration
What does Energy Technology Systems Integration (ETSI) do?
Under the Energy Research and Development Division of the Energy Commission, ETSI Research Area takes an interdisciplinary systems approach to support the development of innovative energy solutions for improving and expanding the operation of the California grid. ETSI considers both the business and the technical needs of all utility rate payers with the goal of providing environmentally sound, safe, reliable, and affordable energy services and products. The top priority of ETSI is the successful integration and efficient operation of all the elements that encompass the California grid.
ETSI focuses on defining customer needs and required functionality early in the research cycle, documenting requirements, and then proceeding with design synthesis and system validation while considering the complete research problem. ETSI contracts engineers and scientific researchers into a collaborative team that works within a structured research, development, and demonstration process. This process takes a project from concept to production then to commercial operation.
- Identify electric system limitations and research solutions to those limitations.
- Confirm project limitations through stakeholder forums.
- Fund Public Interest Energy Research (PIER) projects to overcome project limitations and improve the electric system.
- Focus on integration of new technologies for Smart Grid.
- Provide clear ratepayer benefits and support the implementation of California energy policies.
Research Focus Areas
There are three main research focus areas within ETSI: Smart Grid, WESTCARB, and Energy Innovation Small Grants Program (EISG). Within the Smart Grid focus area, four additional areas of research are explored: Demand Response, Energy Storage, Transmission and Distribution, and Security.
